The Incredible Machine (Rabcat) Invented by Nikola Tesla: An Overview

Correction: we previously believed that Rabcat had ended their collaboration with Microgaming. We deeply regret spreading this falsehood and extend our apologies to Rabcat and Microgaming.

While interest in the Croatian-born inventor who died bankrupt and preoccupied with pigeons has surged in recent years, the truth is that his accomplishments were largely forgotten for decades after his death, and that Thomas Edison received most of the recognition and fame. Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine is a gripping alternate-history video slot that examines the consequences of a world in which all of Tesla’s exuberant, chaotic, and often crazy thoughts come to reality.

Independent studio Rabcat, formerly Microgaming’s sole understudy, has decided to diversify its portfolio by joining Yggdrasil Gaming and releasing its next game as part of the YGS Masters series, which helps smaller developers reach a wider audience by making use of the Yggdrasil platform. This 5-reel, 25-payline slot machine, based on the life of the man who made significant contributions to the development of the modern electricity supply system, is called Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine, and it features exploding wilds, cloned reels, and a free spins bonus round where you can gain experience and increase your winning potential. From $0.25 up to €/$75 a spin, you can explore Tesla’s odd world on your desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device.

It’s interesting to play this slot machine and think about what Nikola Tesla, a lifelong gambler, might make of it. Tesla can be seen in the background on occasion, writing notes and studying his gigantic, steaming, sparkling machine in what is presumed to be Tesla’s Wardenclyffe lab (which was demolished because he couldn’t pay the mortgage). The slot is a visual marvel, with cutting-edge visuals, top-notch sound effects, and a ton of moving pieces to make it feel more alive than is typical of games in this genre. The game has a lot of character, but its gloomy, foreboding atmosphere is what really gets your blood pumping.

A, K, Q, and J royal values in an Art Deco style appear on the reels, joined by capacitors, futuristic goggles, and stopwatches, all of which contribute to the Tesla story. The stopwatch is the most valuable of the regular icons, paying out 40 times your wager for a full house. Tesla in futuristic night-vision goggles serves as the wild symbol, and it has the same value as the highest paying regular symbol.

Incredible Machine (Rabcat) Invented by Nikola Tesla

The Energy Burst feature of Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine consists of three add-ons included in the main game. When one of the regular symbols appears completely stacked on the center reel, this feature kicks in. While 3 bonus spins are awarded for lower-value symbols, 5 bonus spins are awarded for a stack of premium symbols. After activation, you’ll receive one of the following benefits at random:

During the free games, a wild symbol can replace any other regular sign.

For each bonus spin, the game will select three adjacent reels at random and link them so that the symbols on all of the reels are identical.

Exploding Wild – between two and three symbols are picked randomly and changed to locked wilds that remain in place during the feature.

While it is possible to win up to 1000 times your wager in the base game (by getting a full screen of wilds/stopwatches), the Free Spins feature can award even more spins and a higher multiplier if three or more scatter symbols appear anywhere on the screen. Once inside, you’ll enjoy a locked wild on the center reel and a set of reels that pay in both directions. If a Level-Up symbol occurs anywhere on reels two, three, four, or five, the player advances one level (1–5). At higher levels, a second locked wild appears on reels 2 through 4 at random, joining the first locked wild there.

The Final Say on Nikola Tesla’s Amazing Machine (Rabcat)

If this initial project is any indication, Rabcat’s decision to work with the Swedish firm Yggdrasil Gaming was wise. Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine is the first Rabcat game, to our knowledge, to offer a solid gaming experience across the board, including the actual gameplay, despite our knowledge that Rabcat is capable of delivering visually phenomenal games (look at Forsaken Kingdom as an example). Rabcat puts it all together in a novel way that feels like a mix of a video game and a slot machine presented in a highly captivating noir mood, even if the parts aren’t actually unusual at all.

Despite its medium unpredictability and relatively low 4100x potential, the game should provide fair value to those looking for some playing and the possibility of significant wins. The hard-core gamblers and cork-sniffers probably won’t be interested in Nikola Tesla’s Incredible Machine, but the general public will love it.
